May 10, 7:30 pm

Francis Ford Coppola, the celebrated director of films such as Apocalypse Now and The Godfather trilogy, will screen a documentary that explores the inspirations and obstacles of his filmmaking career at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10 at the Rialto Center for the Arts. After the screening of the hour-long documentary, titled CODA: Thirty Years Later, Coppola will hold a question and answer session.

In addition to sharing Coppola’s thoughts about filmmaking, creativity and the nature of consciousness, CODA: Thirty Years Later takes viewers behind the scenes of his latest film, Youth Without Youth, which will be released this fall.

"He is providing his services free as part of an educational outreach on his work in cinema," said Jack Boozer, professor of communication. "The one-hour documentary film on his most recent film and his life work and experiences in general will be followed by an extended question and answer with Coppola on stage."

Boozer, who will moderate the event, said audience members with questions will be able to queue behind two standing microphones near the stage.

Thirty years ago, Coppola went into the jungles of the Philippines and came back with the legendary film Apocalypse Now and the searing documentary, Hearts of Darkness. Youth Without Youth is Coppola's first directing foray in a decade. Shot in Romania, the film is slated for a fall release by Sony Pictures Classics.

Admission to the event will be ticketed but free, and guests are asked to be at the Rialto Theater no later than 7:15 p.m. to take their seats on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Rialto is an 833-seat performing arts venue located at 80 Forsyth St., in the heart of the Fairlie-Poplar district in downtown Atlanta.

Tickets are available at the Rialto Theater box office and at the department of communication on the 10th floor of 1 Park Place South. Please get your tickets soon if you plan to attend this event.

As an added bonus, the intriguing documentary, Hearts of Darkness, about Coppola's problem-plagued making of Apocalypse Now will be screened at 5 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 at Cinefest. Please check their programming for exact schedules.
