Madea's Family Reunion Tops Box Office

Feb. 27, 2006—The Lionsgate film, Madea's Family Reunion, led the box office receipts this weekend raking in $30.3 million from 2,194 theaters. The Tyler Perry extravaganza (written, directed, produced, and starring Atlanta native Tyler Perry) was filmed in Georgia last year. It was one of the first productions to benefit from Georgia's new film tax incentives, and a follow-up to Perry's successful Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which was also filmed in Georgia.

"It's obviously a tremendous opening. We're very happy to be in the Tyler Perry business," Lionsgate domestic distribution president Steven Rothenberg told Hollywood Reporter. "Clearly there was great crossover beyond Tyler's core African-American audience," he added.

This opening marks the most successful theater debut of 2006 and continues the audience trend toward family-friendly films. Other family-oriented films such as Buena Vista's Eight Below, Sony Pictures' The Pink Panther, and Universal Pictures' Curious George rounded out the top five films in theaters last week.
